E-Book Readers: Download Free Books

E-Book Readers: Download Free Books

Posted in Articles by Jess

As our lives get busier and our free time becomes a few minutes here and there, most people don't have the leisure time to physically go to a bookstore, shop around for a good book, then actually engage in reading that book on their free time. Fortunately, someone recognized the need for easy access literature for people who need all the convenience they can get. E-book readers have made it incredibly simple to read a book whether you're in a traffic jam, travelling, or just enjoying your free time sitting at home. Not only are e-book readers perfect for that busy lifestyle of yours, they're also loved by your wallet as they offer the option to download free books! Shopping for a new e-book reader may seem like a daunting task – there are a number of different types and each one has different capabilities. With the right information and knowing what to look for, you'll have that new ereader in your hands in no time.

An e-book in its most literal definition is a book composed in or converted to a digital format for display on a computer screen or handheld device (Merriam-Webster.com). Handheld devices refers mostly to ereaders such as the Nook or Kindle, or smartphones such as the iPhone or Blackberry. Within the Kindle and Nook family are three classes of products: black-and-white e-ink readers, color LCD media tablets, and full-size color tablets like an iPad. For even more convenience, you can buy books or download free books right onto your smartphone! You can get e-books through apps or websites like Amazon's Kindle Store, Apple's iBookstore, Barnes & Noble's Nook Store and and many other e-book retailers all over the web. So those couple of minutes that you're sitting around waiting for your laundry or waiting in line at Starbucks, you can crank out a few pages of that book you've been meaning to get around to. One of the most used e-book readers is of course the computer or laptop. With e-books becoming more accessible, students are able to download entire textbooks onto their laptops, which are generally cheaper and save major back pains from lugging books around campus all day!

Like everything else on the market, there is a lot of competition between different brands of ereaders. And with competition, comes different capabilities and restrictions associated with each ereader. For any of the e-books you buy, you're essentially trapped into an association with a single software reader. If you own e-books from Amazon and a few from Barnes & Noble, there's no way to make one search on your phone to find it. If you want to re-read a book three years down the road you'll have to remember where you bought it. There are certain software programs that convert one platform to another, but sometimes the translations can be inaccurate and the pagination may not be formatted properly. Also, e-books are closely tied by digital rights management technology to a particular seller or reading device. For example, if you buy an e-book from Amazon, there's no way to read that from any other non-Amazon e-book app readers or hardware devices.

Like buying a car or a television, you want to compare or contrast products before you actually make the final purchase. Consider a reader versus a tablet in regards to whether or not you want to do more than just reading. How big of a screen and how heavy do you want your ereader to be? Do you need always-on wireless data? Will you device allow you to download free books from the library? All of these are important questions to ask yourself before heading out to the store or write them down to discuss them with a sales associate. You don't want to invest in an ereader just to get home and realize you did need the always-on wireless data, or you definitely needed that bigger screen.

E-book readers are a great way to keep up with reading in a fast and easy way. Take your book anywhere with you without having the extra weight. Whether you're reading off of a Nook, your smartphone, or your laptop, e-books make life a little more convenient. With your brand new ereader you can download free books to your heart's desire! Since not all ereaders are the same, keep in mind that they all have different capabilities, restrictions, and varieties in personalization.
